This paper is about the importance educating midwives on malaria. Malaria complicates 80% of pregnancies in Uganda, therefore equipping midwives with the necessary information to deliver malaria-related in-service education to pregnant women could reduce infant and maternal mortality in Uganda. This relates to SDG 3 and in-particular the targets 3.1 concerned with maternal mortality and 3.3 concerned with ending the epidemic of malaria.

This paper details a Research Summit, which was convened in Nairobi, Kenya and aimed to: identify regional gaps in knowledge and priorities for nursing and midwifery research and mentorship, recommend strategies that address these gaps, develop a mentorship plan with access to a pool of regional and global nurse and midwifery research experts, and disseminate recommended strategies with a mentorship approach to pave the way for sustainability and replication. It helps support both SDG 3 and SDG 4, recognising the importance of quality education to develop and enhance the careers of nurses and midwives.
The transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has shifted the policy debate from growth to ‘quality of growth’ (QG). We explore a new dataset on QG by the IMF and classify 93 developing countries for the period 1990–2011 in terms of Hopefuls, Contenders and Best Performers. The aims are as follows: (i) to depict the contradiction between high-growth and poor social welfare and (ii) to assess the influence of education and health spending on the QG. The findings have implications on education and health policy, and support SDGs 3 and 4.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is vital for advancing the SDGs. This paper looks at transformative learning that prepares students for societal change. The discussion is grounded both in theories about hope from disparate scientific disciplines and in empirical research about young people’s hope concerning global climate change. These insights particularly inform SDG 4.7 to ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, as well as SDGs 3, 11 and 13.
The New York Academy of Sciences’s Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program.
Recognising the need to support STEM education, as part of its overall commitment to SDG4, the Elsevier Foundation has partnered with the New York Academy of Sciences' (NYAS)to expand its after-school mentoring in STEM programme. Inspiring more than 1,300 Middle School students each year, the After School Program trains graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to mentor 8 -14 year olds. Now with funding from the Elsevier Foundation, the prohgramme will be expanded to reach underserved children.
The UK Government and the Local Government Association have launched the ‘Come Back to Social Work’ campaign to address the shortage of experienced social workers in adults and children’s services. The pilot will see 30 social workers offered 13 weeks’ training to help prepare them to re-enter practice in early 2017. This government campaign contributes to the advancement of SDG 4 to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Aligning with SDG target 10, Quality Education, the partnership aims to help children get greater exposure to science education.

This paper examines the effect of age of marriage on women's schooling outcomes for 36 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa and South West Asia. Girls and young women, particularly those from poor families, face unequal access to education. One factor explaining this is early childhood marriage. This paper contributes to SDG 5 target 3 and SDG 4.
