This paper looks at the gender gap in research evaluation, using detailed data on 180,000 research papers evaluated during the Italian national research assessment (VQR 2004–2010) conducted by the Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (Anvur). The most important empirical finding is that there is a significant gender gap in research evaluation. This paper contributes in particular to SDG 5 and 9.

Sexual minority and transgender women experience increased rates of societal discrimination, harassment, and violence. This research applies minority stress theory links to mental illness and substance use disorders in these groups of women. Clinicians must seek education from multiple sources to develop cultural competence in working with such clients. This research contributes to SDG 10 (reduced inequalities) and SDG 3 (good health and well-being).

Thermostable vaccines can relieve bottlenecks in vaccine supply chains and therefore contribute to SDG 3 target 8 and 3B. The question remains whether benefits would outweigh the additional costs. Computational modeling quantified economic impact of making vaccines thermostable. Thermostable formulations were highly cost-effective or cost-effective in most scenarios explored. Medical costs and productivity savings outweighed significant price premiums.

In certain gender non-conforming minors (aged under 18 years), the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and the Endocrine Society recommend suspending puberty to minimise the discordance between assigned sex at birth and gender identity, thereby maximising the timeframe for gender clarification. This review explores the historical basis for this recommendation together with the cognitive, physical, and surgical implications for gender-incongruent children and adolescents. Transgender health and care falls within the remit of SDG 3.

Land Degradation (LD) in socio-environmental systems negatively impacts sustainable development paths. This paper provides an in-depth investigation of changes in biophysical and socioeconomic conditions of agricultural districts over time with the objective to assess local-scale spatial diversification in the degree of land susceptibility to degradation, taken as a proxy of desertification risk, related to SDG 15 (life on land).

It is no secret to anyone living in Beirut or a similar modern city in a semi-arid tropical country in the summer that their home has become a concrete forest and an urban heat island. Old wood or stone houses and their gardens have been replaced by concrete towers and parking lots, in the name of development. The result is searing summer nights, a drastic loss of insect and avian biodiversity, and a large increase in energy usage for interior climate control. These problems are experienced in rapidly developing urban centers worldwide. Moreover, cities worldwide are struggling with waste disposal. Roof gardens can help solve both problems highlighting synergies with a number of SDGs, including 7 and 11.

The Yangtze River Economic Belt contributes to over 40% of both the overall population and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in China. Recently, China plans for a further but green development in this area. However, ecological and environmental conditions of the Yangtze River Basin have already been largely threatened by human activities in the past. A group of ecologists, environmental scientists, and environmental policy/economy researchers conducted field investigations and data synthesis to identify current stressors, environmental and ecological status and challenges, and offer ecological solutions to mitigate impacts from future development. The insights from the investigations support SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth and SDG 11 Sustainabable cities and communities.
