Emerging evidence indicates that postmenopausal women with periodontitis have aggravated inflammation and prolonged course, with the detailed mechanisms largely unknown. This study aimed to determine the pathogenic role of aberrant extracellular vesicles due to imbalanced-polarized macrophages and explore the therapeutic approach for periodontitis in postmenopausal individuals. Periodontitis in ovariectomized (OVX) mouse models were established to simulate the aggravated periodontitis in postmenopausal women.
Odorant profile analysis of fermented and unfermented protein blends.
Plant proteins can serve as inexpensive and environmentally friendly meat-replacements. However, poor taste characteristics and relatively low nutritional value prevent their full acceptance as meat substitutes. Fermentation of food has been historically used to improve the quality of foods. In this work we describe the improvement in digestibility, nutritional value, physical properties, and organoleptic characteristics, of a pea and rice protein concentrate blend through fermentation with shiitake mushroom mycelium.

Following a decade of research on the environmental impacts of microplastics, a knowledge gap remains on the processes by which micro and nanoplastics pass across biological barriers, enter cells and are subject to biological mechanisms. Here we summarize available literature on the accumulation of microplastics and their associated contaminants in a variety of organisms including humans. Most data on the accumulation of microplastics in both field and lab studies are for marine invertebrates.
