Márcia Balisciano, Corporate Responsibility Director at RELX Group, spoke at The Equality Lounge during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on 24 January 2019.

She took part in a panel on empowering women to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 17 critical goals to improve life for everyone by 2030. The SDGs were proposed by then UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in September 2015 and adopted by every member state. She highlighted the global nature of the goals and the need for women through their work and in their communities to exercise their unique contributions.

She highlighted the free RELX SDG Resource Centre which features leading edge content on the SDGs from all four RELX business units, as well as content from UN and other partners; these encompassed Elsevier’s Gender in a Global Research Landscape, Risk and Business Analytics’ XpertHR on gender pay gap, and the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Global Trends Report 2018 from the UN Global Compact and UN Women (RELX is a signatory to the WEPs).

Fellow panellists included former New Zealand Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Amanda Ellis, Executive Director, Hawaii & Asia-Pacific of the ASU Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, who showcased We Empower, an initiative in which RELX is involved, which celebrates extraordinary women entrepreneurs advancing the SDGs; Dean of Thunderbird School of Global Management, Dr. Sanjeev Khagram, an expert in sustainable development and human security, who highlighted the critical role of academia in promoting women’s entrepreneurship and the SDGs; and President and CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, Alyse Nelson, who introduced women entrepreneurs driving social change across the world. The session was moderated by the Huffington Post’s Jo Confino, Executive Editor of Impact.
