This article discusses how the SDGs can be used to motivate investments in Renewable Energy (RE) in Africa. Using the SDGs as a benchmark for inclusive and sustainable growth the synergy effects provided by RE are identified and an analysis of possible leverage points, available instruments and involved actors shows that there remains a large additional potential. The authors argue that expansion of Renewable Energy supports the fulfillment of at least 10 of the 17 SDGs.
This study makes important links between SDG 2, SDG 5 and SDG 13 through its examination of how husbands and wives within the same household perceive climate risks and use group-based approaches as coping strategies. The findings indicate that options for adapting to climate change closely interplay with husbands' and wives' roles and responsibilities, social norms, risk perceptions and access to resources. A higher percentage of wives were found to adopt crop-related strategies, whereas husbands employ livestock- and agroforestry-related strategies.
West Africa has the highest proportion of married adolescents, and the highest adolescent childbearing rate and maternal death rate in sub-Saharan Africa. Using data from 19 211 women across 13 west African countries, this survey-based study reports that while many adolescents use some antenatal care for their first birth, they seek care later, make fewer visits during pregnancy, and receive less comprehensive care than older first-time mothers.
SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. But how do you measure empowerment? In The Lancet Global Health, Fernanda Ewerling and colleagues use a set of questions from surveys routinely carried out in Africa to develop a survey-based women’s empowerment index (SWPER). The questions include whether a woman thinks being beaten by her husband is justified and who makes household decisions. The authors validate the index externally and demonstrate that it can be used to compare gender empowerment across African countries.
This paper proposes a socio-technical perspective of fossil fuel subsidies and their reform. This persepctive is applied to cases of the South African and Tunisian energy sectors. Fossil fuel subsidies co-evolve with and are locked-in by national energy systems. Renewable energy technologies can help destabilize this fossil fuel subsidy regime. This paper relates to SDG 7.

Climate change, population growth and rapidly increasing urbanisation severely threaten water quantity and quality in Sub-Saharan Africa. Treating wastewater is necessary to preserve the water bodies; reusing treated wastewater appears a viable option that could help to address future water challenges. In areas already suffering energy poverty, the main barrier to wastewater treatment is the high electricity demand of most facilities. This work aims to assess the benefits of integrating renewable energy technologies to satisfy the energy needs of a wastewater treatment facility based on a conventional activated sludge system, and also considers the case of including a membrane bioreactor so treated wastewater can be reused for irrigation.

This article adds a valuable perspective to SDG 11, by arguing that the rush for land due to urban demand must be considered in the debate on sustainable cities. The authors review debates on global land rush and the new urban agenda. Using cases where the global land rush and urbanization are simultaneously intensifying in the global South, the authors identify four areas that should be prioritized in current debates.
Although one of the poorest countries in the world, Rwanda has achieved most of its Millennium Development targets for health. The major mechanisms for implementation of government policies, with the support of development partners, have been the provision of relatively local health centers, payment of health providers by results, setting up an affordable health insurance scheme and the appointment of volunteer Community Health Workers. The effectiveness of this level of community involvement suggests that the SDGs may also be attainable. This article informs the achievement for SDG 3 and its targets.
