Technology

The article examines the way in which artificial intelligence based decision making technologies assess individuals within society to reach a decision. These tools often have elements embedded within them which result in a decision which is disadvantageous to groups who have historically experienced discrimination, disadvantage, disempowerment and marginalisation including (but not limited to) people with disabilities. Contributing to SDGs 3, 4, 9, 10 and 16, the authors recommend that legislature should respond accordingly by identifying contexts in which it is mandatory to employ human decision-makers and by enacting the relevant legislation.

Bio-based aerogels with customizable porosities and functionalities constitute a significant potential for CO2 capture. Contributing to SGDs 7, 9 and 13, this article discusses the recent developments in the synthesis of bio-based aerogels and their application in CO2 capture.
The process industries have been facing ever increasing pressure in the monitoring and control of gaseous pollutants such as volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants. With increasingly stringent regulations and laws, emission management may need to go beyond the traditional leak detection and repair and continuous emissions monitoring system approaches to manage potential emission events. Contributing to SDGs 9 and 13, this article discusses how alternative monitoring technologies, such as optical and remote sensing instruments and wireless sensors, can monitor emissions from a specific equipment/area/unit/plant in a timely manner. Smart integration of process data and emission data is a key step to achieve operational excellence.

This article addresses goals 7, 9 and 13 by developing a decision-making tool for determining the most sustainable use of biomass for carbon management.
This journal article advances SDG 5 and 12 by explaining that with female names, voices and characters, artificially intelligent Virtual Personal Assistants such as Alexa, Cortana, and Siri appear to be decisively gendered female. This gendering of VPAs as female may pose a societal harm, insofar as they reproduce normative assumptions about the role of women as submissive and secondary to men.
This article addresses goals 7 and 13 by providing an in-depth understanding of Chinese policy design in the environment and energy fields and contributing to the public policy literature by filling a research gap.
