On this podcast, Littler shareholder Meredith Shoop provides her annual look at the key items organizations need to include in their employee handbooks. With new state and local employment laws sprouting up on a fairly regular basis, Shoop notes that annual updates are critical. She said the following three areas are absolute "must haves":

  • An at-will employment policy;
  • A Family and Medical Leave Act policy (required if the FMLA applies to your company); and
  • An attempt to address paid sick leave for employers affected by one or more paid sick leave ordinances.

Shoop also called medical marijuana a trend that employers should be on the lookout for with their handbooks. In addition, she recommended that multi-state employers have a national handbook with state supplements to help HR professionals comply with laws across multiple jurisdictions.
