History of World Humanitarian Day
The establishment of World Humanitarian Day on August 19th is a result of the tireless efforts of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Foundation and his family, alongside the Ambassadors of France, Switzerland, Japan, and Brazil. Their goal was to honor the memory of Vieira de Mello and all humanitarian personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Sérgio Vieira de Mello, a Brazilian national, dedicated over thirty years of his life to the United Nations, serving in some of the most challenging humanitarian situations worldwide. His death in 2003, along with his colleagues, was a profound loss to the global humanitarian community. The Sérgio Vieira de Mello Foundation, established in 2006, continues his mission by promoting dialogue for peaceful reconciliation and supporting victims of humanitarian crises.
