There are more child deaths in India than in any other country. Skewed sex ratios at birth and higher mortality rates for girls from certain conditions in the under 5 year age group suggest that there are likely multiple complex factors resulting in increased risks for girls. There has been limited research on mortality in Indian children older than 5 years. This chapter explores some of the factors associated with high mortality rates in Indian girls including in the 5 to 14 age group.
