Solvay, a global leader in materials, chemicals and solutions was nominated by Elsevier for its commitment to the UN SDGs through its One Planet roadmap. Launched in 2019, Solvay's One Planet Roadmap covers three categories - climate, resources and better life and focuses on 10 measurable commitments where the company has the biggest positive impact - directly and indirectly - in line with the ambition and requirements of the UN Sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Focusing specifically on their climate initiatives, Solvay have collaborated with Cavalinho, a Brazilian road transport company, which transports raw materials and finished products from Solvay’s Paulinia site. Cavalinho offsets 100% of their emissions and was awarded Green Seal certification in recognition of their efforts to preserve the environment. The company has an environmental reforestation area amounting to 102 hectares, preserves 63 hectares of native forest in Rio Grande do Sul and, in 2012, acquired 16,500 hectares for preservation in the Amazon rainforest, guaranteeing that they will be able to compensate their carbon emissions for the next 20 years.
Another key initiative is Solvay’s support of the Solar impulse foundation. Solvay was the first technological partner for the Solar Impulse, a visionary project to design, build, and fly a zero-emission aircraft around the world, powered exclusively by solar energy. Fifteen Solvay products were used on the Solar Impulse plane, which completed its flight around the world in July 2016. These helped to reduce the plane’s weight and increase energy performance.
Solvay continues to work with the Solar Impulse Foundation through the World Alliance for Efficient Solutions and twelve Solvay products currently carry the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label.
As part of its transition to cleaner energy sources, Solvay has 59 approved projects worldwide, representing -3.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually (equivalent to taking 1.9 million cars off the road). The phase-out of coal for energy production has been planned for three soda ash plants in Europe with an additional phase-out project in the Green River site, US, the Group will cut its global emissions by 9.5% by 2025. In the US, six businesses and 34 plants are fully supplied by green power, twice as many as in 2021. In China, 100% of operations are now supplied with renewable electricity.
