Scaling renewable energy technologies to mitigate climate change requires transition minerals in volumes much greater than currently mined. Increasing the volume and speed of mining means some places will face unprecedented change and disruption. Researching “resource frontiers” is vital to better understand the local consequences of global climate policies.
