The Information Age is synonymous with massive data acquisition. If these data are accurate, they help make the process transparent. Only then a judicious decision can be made. Such decision, however, requires a scientific process to optimize various factors that govern a process. The petroleum industry in general, and the drilling engineering industry in particular have been a pioneer of new technologies involving monitoring and data processing. This chapter reviews the latest technologies in monitoring and optimization. Any optimization results in tremendous gains in terms of drilling performance and economics. This chapter highlights both existing and emerging technologies in the areas of data acquisition as well as global optimization.
