This paper highlights the indispensable role of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in achieving sustainable development and carbon neutrality goals, especially for sectors that are hard to decarbonize. It emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach that involves multidisciplinary collaboration and multistakeholder partnerships to overcome the "valley of death"—a phase where technologies struggle to transition from research to commercialization due to various barriers. The paper introduces the CarbonX Program, a Chinese initiative, as a successful example of a multistakeholder, multidisciplinary approach to advancing CCUS technologies. International cooperation will be needed to further scale up CCUS deployment and reduce costs for a global transition to a sustainable, net-zero future.
