Modern waste management employs advanced technology to efficiently handle waste, with artificial intelligence (AI) being pivotal in creating intelligent waste management systems. AI excels in complex problem-solving and proving the effectiveness of innovative solutions. This chapter systematically examines 58 research papers from 2018 to 2023 on AI-based waste management systems. It evaluates various models and frameworks proposed for diverse waste management contexts, such as recycling optimization through predictive sorting and tracking, waste enhancement through sensors, robotics, intelligent bins, and logistics and transportation improvement. Additionally, it explores AI's role in detecting illegal dumping, resource recovery, carbon emission assessment, waste pyrolysis, and energy transition processes. It further delves into designing sustainable waste management for smart cities, enhancing efficiency and cost reduction. This chapter encompasses various waste domains, discussing machine and deep learning algorithms. Overall, this chapter provides insights into the potential of AI-integrated waste management, considering challenges, opportunities, and applications.
