Membrane-based technologies have been playing a vital role in water and wastewater treatment owing to the scalability and accessibility. Though numerous studies have been devoted to technically improving membrane performance for tackling membrane biofouling, the gap between the application status of these fabricated membranes and commercial scales remains far from being understood. In this chapter, the advancement in the applications of antibiofouling membranes in water and wastewater treatment is summarized. An overview of the historical evolution of antibiofouling membrane fabrication and applications is provided. The key factors affecting the development of biofouling in practical applications are further analyzed. Furthermore, the application status of different antibiofouling membranes in various scenarios is discussed in detail. This chapter also highlights the challenges and perspectives that should be addressed to bridge the gap between basic lab research and engineering practical applications.
