Climate and energy systems are linked by the complex interactions between energy consumption, emissions, and climate. There are growing efforts to understand these interactions by developing earth and energy system models and simulations. These models employ a variety of approaches. In this section, we discussed the fundamental principles underlying these models. We also discussed the steps involved in energy supply chains. We introduced basic methods for understanding trends in energy consumption and emissions. Finally, we demonstrated the use of decomposition analysis to understand the driving effects of energy consumption and economic activity. We will use these techniques to develop models to understand the interactions between energy consumption, emissions, and climate.
