While caring for an elderly dog can be physically and emotionally challenging, it has its positive sides. Older dogs are commonly less excitable, more loving, and more mellow. They may provide a stronger level of companionship. In this chapter we suggest ways to deal with arthritis, house soiling, dental problems, loss of vision, and auditory impairment. Some problems may need furniture adjustments. Suggestions are made for methods of giving medications to older dogs. When the time comes, there are compassionate methods for euthanasia to be performed that are suited to the beloved canine companion. Finally, suggestions are made for creating a memorial.
