United Nations Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact is a voluntary initiative based on CEO commitments to implement universal sustainability principles and to take steps to support UN goals. The UNGC is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and to take action in support of UN goals and issues embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN Global Compact is a leadership platform for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible corporate practices. Launched in 2000, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world, with more than 9,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and more than 70 Local Networks.

RELX Group has been a signatory to the UN Global Compact since 2004 and its SDG Resource Centre will play an important role in the dissemination of business-driven knowledge, tools & resources, and expertise to advance the SDGs.

The United Nations Global Compact partnered with RELX Group for the launch of the RELX Group SDG Resource Centre on 21 June 2017.

Linking to Goal 13, this report assesses the contribution of business-focused initiatives of the Global Climate Action Agenda to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By providing this analysis, the report seeks to catalyse business action on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and demonstrate the potential collective impact of the assessed initiatives on emissions
To advance goal 16 the UNGC have developed a Business for the Rule of Law Framework. These reports document the consultations held around the world to inform this framework.
This report demonstrates how companies can help to advance all 17 SDGs by operating responsibly in alignment with universal principles and finding opportunities to innovate to address societal challenges. Through a commitment to the UN Global Compact, companies are taking the first step to contribute to achieving the SDGs and have access to a range of tools to scale up their efforts.
Advancing goal 5 requires governments to bring down legal barriers that restrict economic opportunities for women. This report is a call to action from business to create more inclusive economic growth.
This report sets out five defining features of corporate sustainability, which the Global Compact asks businesses to strive towards – looking at why each element is essential, how business can move forward and what the Global Compact is doing to help. It aligns with most of the SDGs but primarily goal 8 on decent work and economic growth and goal 17 on partnership for the goals.
To advance Goal 6, this report recommends good practices for developing water stewardship initiatives in an inclusive and transparent manner that ensures sustainable water management.
This report links to Goal 3 and Goal 5 and Principle 3 of the Women’s Empowerment Principles, which encourages companies to ensure the health, including sexual and reproductive health, of all workers.
