This article introduces the discipline of forensic anthropology—the application of biological anthropology to questions of medicolegal significance. Forensic anthropological methods, approaches, research, and disciplinary capabilities are discussed, and several of the contexts of forensic anthropological practice are detailed, including medical examiner, law enforcement, humanitarian, mass disaster, and post-conflict work. The article concludes by tracing some of the more recent trends within the field, including emphases on mentorship, ethics, and disciplinary standards, and a push toward diversity, equity, and inclusion.
