Indigenous Nations across the globe, though comprising only 5% of the world's population, formally care for 18% of the land. This paper begins with a thorough description of the historical, and current public health status of Indigenous Nations, and then continues with an elaboration of grassroots efforts by Indigenous led organizations, governments and communities. The paper provides a discussion on public health policies from governments and the World Health Organization, with reports from independent Indigenous led advocacy groups and not for profits. Studies demonstrate that a key factor in ensuring program success is Indigenous capacity, skills and co-design initiatives, where Indigenous health in Indigenous hands, is grounded in the policy arena and with the individual and communities based on local knowledge and cultural appropriateness.
