By 2050, 70% more animal source food will be required to feed the global population, highlighting the urgency for novel strategies to improve livestock production efficiency. Harnessing genomic selection for efficient and sustainable livestock production is an important and markable way to address food security challenges. In this chapter, we summarize genomic tools in livestock animal research including whole genome sequencing, high-density SNPs genotyping, and integrative database for the major livestock species. We also review the application and progress of different genomic markers in economically important traits. Future perspectives to integrate gene editing and microbiota genomics are also addressed.
