Intimate partner violence is a common and devastating worldwide public health problem leading to potential long term physical, mental, and financial impacts. Knowledge of the numerous IPV risk factors can help providers determine which persons may be in need of extra care, attention, and prevention strategies. Providers can serve as an important access point for education, resources, and support for persons experiencing violence. Treating all persons in a way that is sensitive to potential trauma can help patients experiencing IPV feel comfortable in the health care setting and potentially seek needed help.
