World Efficiency Solutions - La Galerie des Solutions, 9 December 2015

The Business Case for Carbon Neutral Cities session was hosted by UNEP and Sustainable Energy for All in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Trade and Invest Council and Empower, the largest district cooling operator in the world. Held at La Galerie des Solutions (by World Efficiency Solutions), an exhibition of climate solutions, that took place during the COP21, in immediate proximity to the negotiations zone.

Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is a proven way to improve the energy efficiency of a building, which also has economic benefits. Given target 11.6 aims to reduce environmental impacts of cities, it is important to explore ways in which buildings can become more energy efficient. This article reviews both active and passive storage systems.
Emerging technologies in the domain of solid-state physics have been investigated as serious alternatives for future refrigeration, heat pumping, air conditioning, or even power generation applications. This paper discusses some new technologies, which represent a potential for improvements in energy efficiency, compactness, noise level, as well as a reduction in environmental impacts related to SDGs 7, 12 and 13.

Record attempt has solar flair
An idea spawned a decade ago finally becomes a reality as Solar Impulse prepares for the first round-the-world flight by a plane producing zero emissions. Collaboration across several partners has been a key component to developing the materials and design of Solar Impulse. Innovations like this are vital to SDG 7.2 to increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Total Site Heat Integration (THSI) offers potential to increase energy savings and efficiency. THSI is important to industry since it will help the optimisation of steam and water losses in utility systems to efficiently support utilities consumption in process industry. The article explains the use of extended total site problem table algorithm as a systematic numerical approach to calculate the sensible heat to meet the total site utility requirements. The work supports the SDG 12: Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns; SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure for Sustainable Industrilisation; and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.
Biomass-derived liquid transportation fuels and energy products have been proposed as part of the solution to climate change and thus support SDG 7 and 13 to increase renewable energy in the global energy mix and increase resilience against climate change. This article describes the key challenges and opportunities in modeling and optimization of biomass-to-bioenergy supply chains. Conclusions include potential future research on multi-scale modelling and optimization of biofuel value chains.
Focused on a Green Future
Italy's leading petrochemical producer, Versalis has taken a fundamental shift in its strategy and direction, to renew its focus on innovation and green chemistry, providing opportunities for growth. This is the ICIS/Versalis supplement about green and bio-based chemicals and sustainabliity with videos embedded. Green chemistry fits in with SDG 9 Industry Innovation and SDG 7 Affordable Clean Energy.
In order to ease the pressure on biomass resources and investments in renewable energy, feasible solutions to future sustainable energy systems must involve a substantial focus on energy conservation and energy efficiency measures. This paper defines the concept of 4th Generation District Heating and explains the concepts of smart energy and smart thermal grids, in support of SDG target 7.2 to increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030.

The threat of disruptive climate change has thrown the spotlight on the central role that energy plays in shaping the future relationship between human society and its natural environment. This article provides an overview of how the study of global environmental politics has shaped energy research in the past and how it contributes to defining the future energy research agenda. It provides insights to SDG target 7 to secure clean energy with minimal environmental impact to all.
This report discusses how companies around the world can demonstrate leadership on climate action by aligning corporate voluntary greenhouse gas reduction targets with climate science. This report links to Goals 7, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
