In March 2017, the inaugural Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB) was launched, a result of collaboration between leading institutional investors, human rights specialists and NGOs to produce an assessment framework for private sector performance on human rights. The Benchmark analysed 98 of the Global 500 largest publicly listed companies on their human rights performance. This article provides insight into the results of the first analysis and explain why the CHRB matters.

A number of property companies are going beyond traditional corporate responsibility to be net positive. Instead of opting for sustainability strategies that manage risk and reduce negative impacts, these companies are seeking to put back more into society, the environment and the global economy than they take out. Whilst the breadth and scope of these net positive commitments made by real estate leaders vary, there is enormous opportunity for this sector with sustainability and in supporting SDG 7 and 13.

The 20th Commonwealth Law Conference took place in Melbourne in March 2017 with LexisNexis as the lead sponsor, and hosted by Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) in association with the Law Institute of Victoria.
