A new threat now confronts the Amazon in the form of a massive infrastructure program, the Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America, or IIRSA. This article presents results of a projection analysis showing that IIRSA could push the Amazonian forest past a “tipping point,” replacing it with tropical savanna. Such an event would degrade biodiversity, reduce carbon storage, and harm continental agriculture, dependent on moisture transport from forest-based rainfall recycling.
Purpose: Although the wind, rain, and flooding of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico abated shortly after its landfall on September 20, 2017, the disruption of the electrical, communications, transportation, and medical infrastructure of the island was unprecedented in scope and caused lasting harm for many months afterward. A compilation of recommendations from radiation oncologists who were in Puerto Rico during the disaster, and from a panel of American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) cancer experts was created.
This study supports SDG 1, 3, and 6 and by assessing socioeconomic determinants of leprosy risk in over 33 milion Brazilian individuals and providing a robust assessment of the contribution of deprivation to the risk of leprosy, which is classified as a rare disease.
This report conducts an analysis of the intergovernmental fiscal transfer programs whose budget allocation formulas include population criteria.Through a series of simulations in three Latin American countries (Bolivia, Ecuador, and El Salvador), it analyses what would have happened if more accurate population estimates had been used when allocating transfers to subnational governments. This contributes to SDGs 10 and 16.

This chapters focuses on the consequences mining on river contamination in Bolivia. An unintended consequence of mining has been widespread contamination of riverine environments by toxic trace metals and metalloids. (e.g., arsenic, antimony, cadmium, mercury, lead, and zinc). The type, magnitude, and extent of contamination differ significantly between the humid to hyperhumid tropical rainforests in the north and the semiarid, heavily impacted, rivers in the south.
Understanding the politics of education reform is crucial to assess the challenges facing the SDG of quality education. This article surveys the small academic literature on the politics of reform as well as a wide range of empirical research on reform experiences across the world, with an emphasis on recent reforms in Latin America. We focus on teacher policy reforms, which play a central role in raising learning in primary and secondary schools, but pose three special challenges.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is ambitious and inclusive, but how well are these global aspirations likely to result in implementable policy change for water and sanitation? This article assesses governance challenges at the local level associated with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which pledges to ensure sustainable water and sanitation for all. The majority of developing countries manage services at the subnational level, making the quality of local governance the key ingredient for improvements in the sector.
