Diversity and inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are pivotal components of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Primarily, they relate to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), aiming to promote social, economic, and political inclusion and ensure equal opportunities for all, irrespective of gender, age, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, economic status, or disability. Furthermore, diversity and inclusion relate to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive and equitable quality education. SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) also embodies the values of diversity and inclusion, calling for equal pay for work of equal value and promoting safe and inclusive working environments. Ultimately, the pursuit of diversity and inclusion is indispensable for realizing a fair and sustainable world as envisioned by the SDGs.

This Viewpoint supports SDGs 3 and 10 by discussing how common practices in academic global health are peppered with epistemic wrongs that lead to or exacerbate epistemic injustice; for example, members of the global heath community often witness a cycle in which researchers assume that locals in marginalised areas and members of marginalised groups do not have the capacity to contribute to research, and thereby bypass such people's participation.

As careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) continue to grow, so has attention to Algebra 1 enrollment timing that serves as a critical predictor of STEM success. The present study adds to the literature by examining if Algebra 1 enrollment timing from 8th to 9th grade is related to sense of belonging in math, and whether this association changes as a function of the students’ perceived school and math race/ethnic context.

Monitoring the thermal comfort of building occupants is crucial for ensuring sustainable and efficient energy consumption in residential buildings. Existing studies have addressed the monitoring of thermal comfort through questionnaires and activities involving occupants. However, few studies have considered disabled people in the monitoring of thermal comfort, despite the potential for impairments to present thermal requirements that are significantly different from those of an occupant without a disability.
