This white paper examines whether increasing carbon prices are helping to reduce carbon emissions in the European Union. It directly relates to SDG 7 - affordable and clean energy, and SDG 13 - climate action.
To what extent is scientific research related to societal needs? To answer this crucial question systematically we need to contrast indicators of research priorities with indicators of societal needs. We focus on rice research and technology between 1983 and 2012. We combine quantitative methods that allow investigation of the relation between ‘revealed’ research priorities and ‘revealed’ societal demands, measured respectively by research output (publications) and national accounts of rice use and farmers’ and consumers’ rice-related needs.
Despite the great potential of mobile data to support the delivery of the sustainable development agenda across sub-Saharan Africa, access to the data remains a great challenge due to real or perceived barriers. In order to address gaps in timely data that provide information on the SDGs, a multistakeholder workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2019, contributing to SDGs 9 and 17.
Background: Across countries and disciplines, studies show male researchers receive more research funding than their female peers. Because most studies have been observational, it is unclear whether imbalances stem from evaluations of female research investigators or of their proposed research. In 2014, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research created a natural experiment by dividing investigator-initiated funding applications into two new grant programmes: one with and one without an explicit review focus on the calibre of the principal investigator.
