Biodiversity and ecosystems

This book chapter advances SDGs 15 and 11 by looking at land restoration and its military dimensions, as part of the environmental security discourse, a topic that has not received as much attention as it should in mainstream environmental security studies and policy discussions.
This report offers a framework for principle-based collaboration between business, the UN, governments, civil society and other stakeholders in relation to soil management and the entire agricultural value chain. It directly supports SDG 2 and SDG 15.

Sustainable agriculture holds great promise for alleviating a whole host of environmental problems and health risks associated with the modern industrial agricultural system. However, as this paper demonstrates, USDA-funded agroecological research shows tremendous untapped potential. Winning the Elsevier Atlas Award in June 2016, the authors argue that there is an urgent need for increased investments in research and development to make sustainable food production even more beneficial, contributing to SDGs 12, 13 and 15.

This journal article addresses goals 15 and 13 by exploring effective strategies to protect the global health and diversity of insects.
This book addresses goals 13 and 14 by discussing conservation and biodiversity factors in freshwater ecosystems
Advancing SDG 15, this article examines the relationships between leaf area index and five climate variables.

Plant diversity was shown to influence the N cycle, but plant diversity effects on other nutrients remain unclear. Advancing SDG 15, this article tested whether plant species richness or the presence/absence of particular functional plant groups influences P partitioning among differently extractable pools in soil, P concentrations in soil solution, and exploitation of P resources (i.e. the proportion of total bioavailable P in plants and soil that was stored in aboveground biomass) by the plant community in a 5-year biodiversity experiment in grassland.

Advancing SDGs 2 and 15, this article explored the quality and health of soil resources as an assessment of the sustainability of agricultural practices.

Reducing emissions from deforestation requires policy change. This paper investigates how governance systems and their discursive practices are affecting policies aimed at reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries: it highlights the challenges to the advancement of SDG 15.1 to ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, in line with obligations under international agreements by promoting conservation, restoration and sustainable use of these ecosystems and their services.

Ecosystems provide a range of services that are crucial to human wellbeing, health and survival. This paper provides an updated estimate of the global value of ecosystem services to enable these services to be properly appreciated and taken into account during decision-making. Knowing the true value of ecosystem services contributes to advancing SDG target 13.3 to improve awareness-raising and action on climate change mitigation, as well as SDG target 15 as it helps preserve ecosystems and maintain high biodiversity.
