Ethiopia has experienced rapid urbanization over the past three decades. Several cities expanded rapidly and many satellite towns sprung up around the major cities.

To help create awareness and take steps towards eliminating violence against women, November 25th is designated as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Elsevier has curated a freely available Special Collection of book chapters and journal articles related to this important theme to highlight the urgent need to end violence against women and girls.

This article reviews and maps 19 community land formalization and 14 company land acquisition procedures in 15 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Comparing community and company procedures identifies multiple sources of inequity.
