Reducing large-scale deforestation in commodity frontiers remains a key challenge for climate change mitigation and the conservation of biodiversity. Public and private anti-deforestation policies have been shown to effectively reduce forest loss, but the conditions under which such policies get adopted are rarely examined. This paper proposes a set of conditions for the adoption of effective anti-deforestation policies. Such conditions will help to advance SDG 15.2 to promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests and halt deforestation.
The expansion and operation of water supply systems under growing demands, hydrologic variability, and water scarcity requires strategic decisions on supply sources for reducing and improving reliability and flexibility. This paper provides an integrated framework to optimize water supply system expansions using dynamic programming and combining short and long term water supply source optimization using quadratic programming. This relates to SDG 6.

Telematics and Informatics, Volume 34, Issue 1, February 2017, Pages 79-90.

Focussing on SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and SDG 13 (climate action), this research investigates the convergence of green attributes in multifunctional tech-products.
Recycling and reuse are important elements to a sustainable consumption and production strategy. Contributing to goal 12, this article specifically maps the processes used by three recyclers - two in Brazil and one in Switzerland - in their adoption of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment reverse logistics. The paper was nominated for the Elsevier Atlas Award in December 2017.
Global consumption of aquatic foods has been increasing in recent decades but demand outstrips supply. This study evaluated the sustainability of cage production systems for Nile tilapia in the Santa Cruz Reservoir. The results showed that by creating a framework to measure the sustainability of aquaculture production, effects of increasing production can be assessed and measures can be taken to meet SDG 14.2 to sustainably manage and protect marine ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts.
