With this report, Elsevier aims to benchmark and map out the global landscape of cancer research to provide helpful new insights. Along with other materials, this benchmark report will offer the research community, pubic, policymakers and research funding organizations information on the current state of cancer related research. We hope this report will be used to inform the development of new operational approaches, priorities, policies and funding strategies to produce new knowledge that will address key challenges related to cancer in the most effective, efficient and impactful way possible.

Global consumption of aquatic foods has been increasing in recent decades but demand outstrips supply. This study evaluated the sustainability of cage production systems for Nile tilapia in the Santa Cruz Reservoir. The results showed that by creating a framework to measure the sustainability of aquaculture production, effects of increasing production can be assessed and measures can be taken to meet SDG 14.2 to sustainably manage and protect marine ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts.

In 2010, 10 percent of the global primary energy demand was met by bioenergy production. The demand for bioenergy, excluding traditional uses, could more than double by 2035. Bioenergy business operators are essential for the sustainable development of bioenergy systems. This study examines their sustainability criteria and offers insights into how their approach could mature. This is important for advancing SDG target 7 to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

This study unveils gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to have disproportionately high burdens of HIV infection in countries of low, middle and high income in 2016. In particular, incidence densities of HIV in MSM are unacceptably high in countries as diverse as China, Kenya, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. This research directly relates to SDG 10 (reduced inequalities) and SDG 3 (good health and well-being).

The Lancet HIV Volume 3, No. 7, e323–e332

By 2020, the UN has set a target to reduce the number of new HIV infections to below 500 000. This Personal View article puts the aim in the context of previous prevention targets and highlights the research and real-world evidence that supports HIV prevention programmes. By focusing on a broad set of approaches (such as condom distribution, education, and access to antiretroviral therapy) and ensuring they are applied to the most relevant populations the ambitious 2020 targets might be met. This contributes to SDG3 and the bid to end the AIDS epidemic.
