This article explores how innovations can be used to advance goals 2 (zero hunger) and 12 (sustainable consumption and production). Nematicides - products for controlling soil-borne pests in root crops - are under threat of further regulation or withdrawal due to their toxicity. The Nematicide Stewardship Programme is demonstrating they can be used responsibly and safely to ensure their approval is maintained. But one farmer has taken it a step further by using technology to ensure his nematicide is applied accurately.

Supports Goal 15. The HPCC Systems community 10K Trees challenge has launched in conjunction with the National Forest Foundation’s effort to plant 50 million trees across the National Forests of the USA by 2023.

The RELX Group Environmental Challenge 2018 is now open for applications, awarding projects that best demonstrate how they can provide sustainable access to safe water or sanitation. There is a $50,000 prize for the first place entry and a $25,000 prize for the second place entry.

Supporting Goal 12. Higher plastics recycling targets in the EU do not necessarily have to be detrimental to EU polymers producers, who will find new business opportunities in the recycling industry. EU countries will need to improve their recycling systems in order to achieve a more unified approach.

The goal of SDG 5 is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The issue of sexual harassment is now at the forefront thanks to the #metoo movement and the countless women coming forward with stories of facing harassment and inappropriate conduct at work. As a result, organizations are starting to change their policies and practices with a renewed awareness and emphasis on training.
